Spanish judge arrives in Honduras to investigate killings of journalists

Published in: The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas - July 14, 2010

Judge Jesús Fernández arrived Saturday, July 10, in Honduras for a special mission to help the government of Porfirio Lobo in its investigation into the deaths of at least seven journalists this year, reported El Heraldo.

In May, President Lobo asked Spain for help to investigate these crimes, which according to Honduran authorities have nothing to do with the journalists practicing their jobs, and the government insists public institutions are not involved, reported Europa Press.

In an interview with EFE, Fernández said that “sometimes it is good for other people come to tell what went wrong so that the person being advised won't repeat the same mistake." However, he also insisted that his mission is only to give advice.
