FARC tried to poison Uribe

Published in: ColombiaReports.com - October 14, 2010

Colombia's largest rebel group the FARC tried to poison former President Alvaro Uribe on several occasions, the country's defense minister said Tuesday.

According to Minister Rodrigo Rivera, emails found on the computers of "Mono Jojoy," a FARC leader who was killed by armed forces last month, show that the guerrilla group had successfully infiltrated Uribe's security network.

"I can confirm that one of the ways the FARC were looking to make an attempt against the life of former President Alvaro Uribe was poisoning his food" between 2008 and 2010, the defense minister said at a press conference.

Rivera added that three members of the FARC had successfully infiltrated Uribe's entourage and one of them unsuccessfully tried poisoning the former president at a community meeting.

The FARC gave up the poisoning attempts after being discovered by Uribe's security personnel, the minister added.
