HRW denounces at the UN human rights abuses by Venezuela
The non-governmental organization, within the framework of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), urged nations to ask the government of Nicolás Maduro to comply with international legal obligations in terms of human rights

Published in: ElUniversal.com - June 24, 2014

Human Rights Watch (HRW) expressed on Monday at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) its deep concerns over the serious human rights situation in Venezuela, describing it as "the most alarming" the country has gone through in years.

The non-governmental organization said that after an anti-government protest held on February 12, 2014, law enforcement officers have hit people brutally, used firearms, pellets, and tear gas disproportionately against unarmed demonstrators.

"They (law enforcement agents) deliberately attacked journalists and other people who took photographs or recorded videos of repression against protesters, yet they allowed pro-government armed groups to attack demonstrators. Sometimes they (officers) even collaborated with them" the organization commented.

In this regard, the NGO called on world nations to urge the government of Nicolás Maduro to comply with international legal obligations in terms of human rights.
