Israel is Concerned About Iran's Growing Influence in Latin America

Published in: VirtualJerusalem.com - June 2, 2009

This was asserted by Alex Ben Zvi, Director of the Foreign Ministry's Latin America Division. The diplomat stressed that “both bombings in Buenos Aires (Regarding the Israel Embassy and AMIA) are a clear representation of the danger” that Iranian presence represents in the region. Ben Zvi avoided providing further detail regarding a report that links Venezuela and Bolivia with Iran’s nuclear program. Speaking to this agency, he confirmed that Israel will be an Observer in the upcoming General Assembly of OAS.

Israel’s government is concerned about Iran’s growing insertion in Latin America, and it also warned that the attacks against the Israeli Embassy and AMIA “clearly represent the danger” that the Islamic Republic represents.

Such statement was made by Alexander Ben Zvi, Director of the Foreign Ministry's Latin America Division, who, talking to the Jewish News Agency (Agencia Judía de Noticias en español), asserted that he is “overly concerned about Iran’s insertion in Latin America.”
Ben Zvi avoided providing further detail regarding a report that links Venezuela and Bolivia with Iran’s nuclear program, which is being questioned by Israel, the biggest world powers, and the United Nations.

Israeli press released today a secret piece of information from the Israeli Chancery that reveals that Venezuela and Bolivia supply uranium for Iran’s nuclear program.

Regarding Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon travelling to attend the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which will be held in Honduras, Ben Zvi said that “Israel participates of this event since many years ago.”

He stressed that “the event has many training programs such as the training of young businessmen as well as the cooperation in the fight against anti-Semitism in the region.”
“Israel will attend the Assembly as an Observer, the same as it’s been doing since many years ago.”

On Tuesday, DAIA, the central organization for political affairs of Argentinean Jewish community, called all community leaders to an extraordinary meeting due to the serious incidents that took place in Buenos Aires on May 17th, and also due to the results of the search carried out last week, in which the police found guns and banners in which Venezuela's President appeared.
