Venezuelan dissent: Attempted Enabling Law is a Cuban plan
"We have enough information that makes us believe that the special powers are for electoral purposes and will be used to justify harassment against the government's political contenders"

Published in: EL UNIVERSAL - August 23, 2013

The opposition Unified Democratic Panel (MUD) maintained support to all the legislative initiatives provided in the Constitution to fight against corruption. In that sense, the Venezuelan opposition coalition believes that the Enabling Law to be requested by President Nicolás Maduro is "unjustifiable."

"We have enough information that makes us believe that the special powers will be used for electoral purposes, to chase the government's political contenders, and to prevent the Venezuelan people from knowing the truth of what is happening in our country. This plan has been devised in Cuba to continue having access Venezuelan resources," dissenters said in a statement.

They added that pro-government representatives "have no moral authority to convince others that they intend to fight against corruption, because they, at the National Assembly, have refused to investigate countless corruption complaints," filed by opposition deputies.
