The government of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe used selected computer files of Raúl Reyes, the leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) killed on March 1, 2008 in Ecuador, to harm his counterparts Rafael Correa of Ecuador and Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, according to US diplomatic cables leaked by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks.
The US Embassy in Bogotá followed every Colombian government's step, as shown by the cables sent to the US government after the Colombian bombing on Ecuadorian territory which led to the death of Raúl Reyes, Efe reported.
Colombian newspaper El Espectador, which in February 2011 received thousands of cables leaked by WikiLeaks, reported that the first US diplomatic cable was sent a month after Colombian troops raided on a FARC camp in Ecuadorian soil.
According to the cable, "both Juan Manuel Santos, the then Minister of Defense and Uribe's successor, and Vice-Minister Sergio Jaramillo had confirmed that the seized materials would be used as an evidence of the links between FARC and the presidents of Venezuela and Ecuador."
Jaramillo was in charge of the strategy. "He travelled each week to display the information to several governments," said the cable. By the time the cable was released, Jaramillo had visited Mexico and Brazil and was expected to visit Chile, United Kingdom and France.
According to the leaked cables, Álvaro Uribe also targeted at his domestic opponents.
